Who do I contact if I want to speak to someone about the Academy or my child?​

If you want to speak about an issue with your child, then please speak to your child's teacher. Any further issues should be directed to the school office by either using the contact form or contact information on the contact us page.

How do I contact the Headteacher?

There are 3 ways to get in contact with the Head of School.

 1) Call in to the school office and make an appointment. 

 2) Email school FAO Head of School on: office@tuckswoodacademy.co.uk 

 3) Write a letter.  Our Head of School wants to hear what you have to say.

How do I get in contact with my child's teacher?

You should be able to speak to your child's teacher at the start or end of the school day when dropping off or collecting your child. Otherwise please either:

 1) Call in to the school office and make an appointment. 

 2) Email school at: office@tuckswoodacademy.co.uk or

 3) Write a letter and send it in with your child or leave at the school office.

Where is the lost property kept?

Please see child's teacher for any item of clothing/school equipment that has been lost. Unfortunately the school cannot accept responsibility for any piece of clothing/equipment that is lost. Please sew name labels or write your child's name in their clothing.

How do you keep me informed of my child's progress?

School reports are issued to all the children towards the end of the school year. There are also two parent consultation evenings every year when you can make an appointment to discuss your child’s progress with their teacher(s). Teachers are available at the end of the school day to answer questions regarding your child. If you would like to talk to your teacher you can also book an appointment with them by arranging with the teacher directly or by contacting the school office.

How long does the school day last?

The school day lasts from 8:40 until 15:15. Lunch is from 12:00 until 13:00.

What is the Academy policy regarding the use of children's images?

Any use of children's images will be for Academy purposes only. Images will only be used for local press releases, Academy newsletters, Academy websites and class displays (subject to photo permission). Any images taken of children for use on the school website will be blurred or left unused unless permission is given by the child's parent or guardian. Permission for using images is sought on an annual basis from the child's desigated parent/guardian. Should you take any photos of your child we request that you do not include any other images of other children. We also request that you DO NOT upload images to social media.

My child is absent and cannot attend school. What do I do?

If your child is unwell, you must telephone the school office at the earliest possible convenience or send a note in with your child upon their return. Please remember that your child must remain off school at least 48 hours after the last signs of sickness. Please call the school if your child is absent and DO NOT fill in the contact us form.

What is the Academy uniform?

Are there any breakfast or after school facilities for my child?

The school offers breakfast club from 07:30 to 08:40 costing £5 from 07:30 and £3 from 08:00 (this includes breakfast).

After school club runs from 15:15 to 17:30 costing £2.50 until 16:30 and £5 until 17:30.

What is the Academy policy on term time holidays?

Holiday during term time is not authorised. Please fill out a leave of absence form so we know when your child will be absent. If your child has a poor attendance level and you take them out for a holiday during term time you may be subject to a Fixed Penalty Notice.

What are INSET days?

INSET stands for In Service Training. All schools in England are required to have five INSET days every year when they are closed to pupils to allow for staff training. They are an important part of staff training and development. INSET days ensure that all staff stay up to date with latest developments in education and so that our Academy maintains a high standard of teaching and learning for your child.

What are Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), Key Stage 1 (KS1) and Key Stage 2 (KS2)?

Early Years Foundation Stage is Nursery and Reception (age 3-5). Key Stage 1 is Years 1 and 2 (age 5-7). Key Stage 2 is Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 (age 7-11).

What is the national curriculum?

The national curriculum outlines what all children should be taught in each Key Stage. To find out more go to http://www.qca.org.uk/

What are SATs?

They are Statutory Assessment Tasks. These are national tasks / tests which are used to assess all children at the end of Key Stage 1 (Year 2) and the end of Key Stage 2 (Year 6). The SAT results give a ‘snapshot’ of children’s attainment; in other words how they achieved in particular tasks or tests taken on as specific day / week.

What  is Teacher Assessment?

This is the teachers’ judgement about the progress and attainment of a child. This judgement will be made based on evidence gathered over a period of time and from a range of pieces of work, together with test results. It is usually a more reliable judgement of a child’s attainment than a test result alone.

What is the Academy policy on use of Mobile Phones on site?

Mobile phones are not permitted in the Academy. If your child chooses to bring their mobile phone on site we do not accept responsibility for any damage or loss of equipment. Parents are kindly requested to turn their mobile phones off. Should you require to make a phone call please do so outside of the school building.

What happens if it snows?

A decision will be taken by one of the senior management staff whether school will open (or remain open if it snows during the day). Should the decision be taken to close the school, parents/carers should refer to:

If the decision is taken to close the school during the day, a message will be sent out to all parents/carers to inform them of the situation and the steps they will need to take next.

What do I need to do to help my child with their learning?

Tuckswood Academy & Nursery encourages parents/carers to support their child's learning by ensuring:

  • Children arrive at school on time. Registration starts at 8:50 and your child will be marked late if they arrive after this time.

  • Children bring the correct equipment to school, such as reading book and record, PE kits and homework.

  • Children read regularly throughout the week and that parents/carers are listening to their child read.

Social media, how does it affects my child and should they be using it?

Social media can be a great tool for keeping in touch with people. However it can also cause problems amongst children. Although children often surpass adults when it comes to technology, they often do not understand the severe consequences it can cause. Here at Tuckswood Academy & Nursery we discourage the use of social media as children at primary school age do not and should not be using social media as it frequently spills over into learning time. Parents should be aware that all social media platforms (including Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram etc.) are illegal for children under the age of 13 and in some cases 16 (Whatsapp).
